What’s new feature in OJS Version 3.3.0-3

The feature in OJS Version 3.3.0-3

At the beginning of February 2021, PKP has released OJS version 3.3.0.3, this version is the latest version of OJS at this time. If we look at the previous OJS version upgrades such as OJS 3.0.0 to OJS 3.2.0. so we see a lot of changes in terms of appearance and features provided. Then does the OJS 3.3.0.3 version provide the same changes as before? Let’s discuss in detail what you get when you install / upgrade to OJS version 3.3.0-X:

  1. Backend page view
In OJS version 3.3.0, the backend page display provides a very modern change, this display provides more interesting and cleaner detailed information, you can see the difference in the image below.
    Before :

    After:

  2. Date and time format
In OJS version 3.3.0, a new feature is also found where we can set the date and time display format according to our wishes, here is the feature menu for changing this date and time format:

  3. Disable Submission feature
Another new feature that you also get in version OJS 3.3.0 is “Disable Submission” so you can prevent users from submitting new articles to your journal. How to activate it, please see the image below:

Those are some significant changes that you will get if you use OJS version 3.3.0, but during the use of OJS 3.3.0 we also found some issues that you should consider before using OJS version 3.3.0 such as:

  1. Plugins
There are several plugins that don’t support this latest OSS, such as: JATSparser.
So if you previously used this plugin to display JATs files in your journal, you should consider it carefully before upgrading to OJS version 3.3.0.
  2. Custom Block manager
We found another bug in that all block menu entries in the custom block manager plugin will be the same in every journal.
This happens if you upgrade and have multiple journals in one OJS, then you will find that the block menu that you created in the Custom block manager plugin will be the same every journal. So to avoid you losing this data, do a database backup on the previous OJS.
  3. Announcement
In version OJS 3.3.0-3 we no longer find the image upload tool/source code in the announcement menu. Before:

    After:

  4. Submissions
Previously, in OJS version 3.2.x we could delete article submissions, it can’t be done again if you are using OJS version 3.3.0.x because the “Delete” menu can’t be found anymore even though we use user role journal manager/admin.

In the process of upgrading OJS 3.2.1-2 to OJS 3.3.0-3 we also found some bugs such as “Issue with Database” and “Foreign key constraint is incorrectly formed”, to solve this bug you can click the link below:

  1. Issue with database upgrade
  2. Foreign key constraint is incorrectly formed

Conclusion :

So in conclusion, if you want to create a new journal, we strongly recommend using the latest version of OJS 3.3.0.3, even though there are some plugins that are still not compatible. However, if you are currently using OJS version 3.2.X, we suggest waiting for the stable version of OJS 3.3.0-x, this is because bugs were found as explained above.
