In general, journals require some contribution and involvement from various users including authors, reviewers, and journal editors. In OJS itself, the role of the reviewer is very important and necessary. Users who have a role as a reviewer are usually selected users, but if miss a little configuration you will find that the OJS platform allows for any public user to register as a reviewer. As a result, you will find many irrelevant reviewer roles. This article will discuss how to deal prevent any user to register as a reviewer role on your journal.
What is a Reviewer? #
Reviewers are those selected by the Editors section to review journal article submissions. Reviewers will be required to submit reviews for the assigned submission and are also able to upload data attachments for the use of the Editor and Author/Author. The Reviewer will also be able to be rated by the Editor, however, this also depends on the policies of the journal.
In most journals, the reviewer’s role can only be assigned to the selected user. However, by default OJS allow anyone to register him/herself as a reviewer on the registration page.
On the user registration page in OJS 3, someone can just register as an author/writer or reviewer. This is of course allowed, but sometimes users only want to register as an author, and not infrequently users ignore the reading at the bottom including making requests to become a reviewer so that users check all of these sections. However, if you want to remove this feature so that OJS users cannot register as a Reviewer, you can do it in the following way:
1. Log in as a journal manager or as an OJS site administrator
2. Go to Menu Users and Roles
3. Then select the Roles tab and scroll to the bottom
4. Select the Reviewer section, and click the small arrow until ‘Edit‘ appears
5. Then the Edit window appears, select the Roles Option section ‘Allow user self-registration, then Uncheck or remove the checklist
Furthermore, it can be seen on the previous menu or on the Registration menu at the bottom, that there are no more options to register as a Reviewer role
Conclusion : #
OJS separates roles in an effective and comprehensive system to divide tasks between users, define workflows and limit access to that part of the system. Users can register different roles/access rights in one journal. When the user logs into the system, the user will be taken to the main page / home page and the user will see a list of what roles they will choose for each journal in the system (with certain users for editing profiles, changing their passwords etc.) and then if checked will create an abnormality that all authors will register themselves as reviewers, this will make it difficult for the journal manager if they want to determine reviewers because all authors will be registered as reviewers.
